University of Cincinnati
The University of Cincinnati (UC) is a premier, public, urban research university dedicated to undergraduate, graduate, and professional education, experience-based learning, and research. The UC Academic Health Center (AHC) consists of the colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Allied Health Sciences. As a major source of health care in Greater Cincinnati and the major institution preparing the regional health work force, the AHC has a strong commitment to improving health and reducing disparities in the communities it serves.
Through Urban Universities for HEALTH, the University of Cincinnati will engage top university and health professions leadership across disciplines in order to assess and improve institutional effectiveness with regard to health workforce strategies. An interactive database will be developed that will enable tracking students from admission to the university through employment, five years post-graduation.
The University of Cincinnati has a strong track record of participation in data driven, collaborative initiatives around both education and health issues:
- The University of Cincinnati has been a lead participant in the Robert Wood Johnson-funded Aligning Forces for Quality program since 2006, which aims to drive measurable improvements in health care quality and equity nationally and within target communities. More than 500 primary care physicians in the Tri-State area voluntarily report clinical outcomes data as part of this program;
- The University of Cincinnati is a founding member of the STRIVE partnership, a coalition working across sectors and along the educational continuum to drive better results in education; and
- In September 2010, Greater Cincinnati was selected as one of 17 ONC-funded Beacon Communities that are building and strengthening local health IT infrastructure and testing innovative approaches to make measurable improvements in quality, cost and population health. The University of Cincinnati is one of six community partners comprising the collaborative.
The University of Cincinnati has new leadership - the President, the Provost and two Academic Health Center deans — who are deeply committed to moving the needle on diverse enrollment, culturally competent education, reducing health and education disparities and collaborative institutional learning and improvement. The priorities of this initiative complement the goals and priorities of the University of Cincinnati's new strategic plan and five year diversity plan.
The University of Cincinnati recently completed a comprehensive regional health workforce profile, which contains up-to-date headcounts and available demographic data for Hamilton County for a variety of health professionals. The report also shows that there are gaps in available data, and exhibits the need for better data collection mechanisms in order to get a clear picture of the diversity and number of health care providers in the region.
The profile, produced by HealthLandscape, LLC. in collaboration with the UC Academic Health Center, gathers data on advanced practice nurses, audiologists, community health workers, pharmacists, physical therapists, primary care physicians, registered dietitians, registered nurses, social workers and speech-language pathologists. Data was not available for all health care occupations.
